Johannesburg, South Africa – 23 September 2025 — Egoli Gas, in collaboration with – NGV Gas, has successfully converted a 2014 Volkswagen Polo from a petrol to a dual-fuel Petrol / Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle. This pilot project demonstrates how practical, cleaner transport solutions can be implemented today, supporting both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
CNG is increasingly recognised as a smart, scalable fuel alternative for local fleets. CNG provides a balanced combination of cost savings, operational efficiency, and reduced emissions with infrastructure and technology available today.
“Natural gas is on track to reshape the automotive industry, offering a cleaner burning alternative source compared to conventional petrol and diesel. Our partnership with CNG Holdings represents an important milestone, blending innovation with a mutual dedication to a greener Johannesburg. This project is only the beginning, collectively, we are forging a path toward more cost-effective and environmentally responsible transportation for South Africa’s future.” ” says Erika Da Cruz, Egoli Gas General Manager.
The Volkswagen Polo conversion prioritised environmental benefits and operational cost savings. The converted vehicle continues to perform reliably, and the CNG tank requires refuelling every few days — a minor adjustment for significant environmental and operational advantages.
Environmental and Operational Advantages:
• Reduced emissions: Fewer harmful pollutants compared to petrol and diesel, supporting cleaner urban mobility.
• Lower operating costs: CNG fuel is less expensive, and cleaner engine combustion may reduce maintenance requirements.
• Sustainability alignment: Supports both Egoli Gas and CNG Holdings’ ESG objectives and broader environmental commitments.
“As part of the Reatile Group, CNG Holdings is committed to driving sustainable innovation across our operations. Converting Egoli Gas’ fleet vehicles to CNG is a practical demonstration of how cleaner energy solutions can reduce emissions, lower operating costs, and contribute to a greener future for our cities,” says Josua le Roux, CEO, CNG Holdings.
The pilot project will inform a broader fleet conversion plan, with additional vehicles expected to follow. This initiative underscores how cleaner, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transport is achievable today.
